We have created a unique program to humanize and inspire a passion for STEM by linking STEM to the potential to solve community or health-based problems. Specifically, Duke students develop and implement engineering approaches to human-centered design and then teach it to adolescents and young adults that are historically under-represented in STEM disciplines. Our domestic and international educational programs have a series of interconnected goals. Both types of programs engage members of underrepresented communities in hands-on STEM activities with different end goals. In the international setting, the goal is to foster creativity in human-centered design to solve community problems while locally the goal is to give students opportunities to interest in engineering. A related goal is to encourage students to teach what they have learned to others so that learners become teachers, creating a new generation of learners each year.
